Praxis EMR Selects MedUnity as its Exclusive HIE and Fax Services Provider
Press Release – February 25, 2010
MedUnity, innovator of the first public Nationwide Health Information Exchange (HIE) and fax service for the secure delivery of Electronic Healthcare Record information, announced today its selection by Praxis Electronic Medical Records to be their exclusive provider of HIE and fax services for the forthcoming Praxis 5.
Richard Low, MD, Praxis CEO and founder announced “It is clear that while the efficient
creation and management of electronic medical records is a critical component to improving
healthcare outcomes, it is also imperative that physicians are able to share these records instantly
and securely with any and all members of the medical community. Up until now physicians were
limited to sharing their medical records via fax or within closed-loop communities of users on
similar systems.”
“After reviewing all the information exchange solutions out there, we found that MedUnity had
by far the most flexible interface engine and approach, allowing a text-free based system like
Praxis to easily interface with template-based EMRs or any other system whatever it may be.
Because this is a service, there is nothing our customers have to build or install other than the
Praxis EMR. MedUnity is the only HIE service we found that also features fax services assuring
information delivery to off-network practices. It is very exciting that all Praxis customers will be
able to exchange their EMR/EHR information with any member of the US medical community
regardless of what system they may or may not have. We were further convinced that MedUnity
was the right choice as they will be working with the state HIN’s ensuring our customers are able
to transparently participate in the state initiatives as well.”
“We are very excited about being selected by Praxis EMR”, said Christopher Bushing,
MedUnity’s CEO. “Praxis’ leadership position within the EMR/EHR industry, as demonstrated
by their first place ranking in the 2009 American Academy of Family Physicians' (AAFP) Family
Practice Management EHR User Satisfaction Survey, further supports our decision to align
ourselves with this innovative company”.
“By implementing our web-services API into Praxis EMR, thousands of their customers will soon
be able to send and receive electronic medical records securely with little or no disruption to their
existing workflow while meeting the HITECH “electronic information exchange” requirement
and allowing for backward compatibility with faxing. The MedUnity solution creates an easy
migration path from fax and paper based communications to secure, electronic-based
communications for the same cost as their existing fax-based solutions” according to Bushing.

Background
Beginning in 2011, all medical practices will be required to electronically exchange medical information in order to satisfy the principles of “interoperability” and “meaningful use” as defined in HITECH. Most practices currently rely on the fax machine as the primary tool to exchange medical information with other practices. MedUnity has combined its HIPAA-compliant, pure electronic, point-to-point medical record exchange platform, with current fax technology. This creates a solution that meets the principles of the HITECH “electronic information exchange” requirement while allowing backward compatibility with faxing. The MedUnity solution creates an easy migration path from fax and paper based communications to secure, electronic-based communications.
