SMREx has eliminated the need for expensive private Health Information Exchange (HIE) and Regional Health Information Organization (RHIO) networks. These other networks have significant up front costs and can take years to implement and, unlike SMREx, also have substantial on-going maintenance costs. SMREx allows groups of practices to create their own Virtual Regional Health Information Organizations (VRHIO's) at a fraction of the cost of the more traditional private community-based models.
